Applewood's Jaycee Park
I have not been to this park for a really long time. I used to come here often in my high school years during lunch and after the day was finished. I still vividly remember sitting at one of the nearby benches with my friend and fellow Geocacher SuperCoolDude95 talking about how adult life will be and reminiscing about the early days. I still remember back in 2017 when the new playground was finally finished all my friends and I were hating on how modern the design looks but it was probably just sentimental memories blinding us from seeing the new improvements. I have placed a cache here so I have a reason to visit this old memory lane and for visitors to sit at the nearby benches to ponder about life like I used to do.
Applewood, located in the city of Mississauga is a suburban district "neighbourhood" consisting a group of smaller neighbourhoods, many bearing its name. The area was originally settled in the 1800s having notable villages such as Dixie and Burnhamthorpe. Named after the abundant amount of apple trees in the area, many of the original pioneering families that settled in the area became owners of apple orchards. Eventually with the orchards declining economically, the area became stagnated being mostly rural until suburban development rapidly began during the 1950s economic boom post-World War 2.
Jaycee Park located in the neighbourhood of Burnhamthorpe offers a variety of exciting playground equipment and activities for children to enjoy. One of the highlights of the playground is the wood towers and panels, which offer a fun and challenging climbing experience for kids. The towers are connected by bridges and other features, allowing children to explore and play in a safe and engaging environment. In addition to the wood towers and panels, there is a themed playground area that encourages imaginative play. The playground in this park never looked like it does now, it used to be more of a wooden fort style playground before renovations completed in 2017. If the children's playground is too young for the more grownups, there is a small quiet path offering local residents a small area for a peaceful walk with benches to rest on. Overall, Jaycee Park is a nice addition to the local community and helps compliment the nearby Burnhamthorpe Community Centre.
Please note that the park closes daily at 11pm and it is highly recommended to come here during daylight hours.
The nearby Burnhamthorpe Community Centre was originally built a little over half a century ago in 1974. Last year in 2024, the city finally got the community centre reopened and hosted a grand reopening ceremony on February 19th 2024 which I was lucky to attend. The city decided to go through with this huge revamping project around many communities as a lead up to Mississauga's 50th anniversary. The city spent around $40 million dollars for the big overhaul of the centre. The new centre now offers multiple new gym facilities and a new swimming pool which has now retired the nearby Glenforest Pool. Even though they got rid of the outdoor ice skating rink with the new swimming pool taking its place, they still retained the old indoor skating rink for the community. Overall I think the city did a very nice job with improving these local facilities in my area.
