During a recent recreational, off-roading expedition, we discovered a scenic loop that was absolutely jaw-dropping! This road takes you up-mauka from the Skyline Road to elevations of almost 12,000 feet. All the while you are driving, you are weaving in, around and amongst the brick-red and insanely gorgeous cinder cones that are close to the peak of Mauna Kea. These ancient beauties are stunning on account of their vibrant hues and other-worldly appearance. I felt compelled to hide a few caches and am hoping to attract the boldest and most adrenaline-addicted cachers. Come and explore this magical land of volcanic eye candy!
PLEASE NOTE: We recommend taking the first leg of this "loop" that you will come to and continuing to the cache at the end of the spur road, and then returning the same way. This route is easily doable for most drivers with basic off-roading skills. We drove the rest of the loop and it can best be described as "hellified", for experts only, and the views don't warrant the back ache!
