Geocache Description:

Welcome to The Porch Pirate of Covington — located near one of the oldest family-run establishments in Louisiana, serving Covington since 1876.

This historic landmark is more than just a store— it's a is half-shop, half-museum filled with antique tools, curiosities, and oddities. Among the treasures: a “petrified rat,” century-old bicycles, and shelves stacked with relics that tell the story of small-town Louisiana commerce. If you’ve got time, don’t miss raising the lid on the old coffin (if you dare).

The building itself is a Covington icon, so much so that Hollywood came calling — the store’s frontage was featured in the famous “death parade” scene of the The Netflix Original, Highwaymen starring Kevin Costner and Woody Harrelson. Today, the store still thrives as both a working hardware business and a magnet for visitors who love history, character, and charm.

Pirate Backstory

Legend has it that long ago, when steamboats still plied the Bogue Falaya and horse-drawn wagons rattled down Columbia Street, Covington was no stranger to rogues, smugglers, and ne’er-do-wells. Among them was a porch-lurking thief known only as the Porch Pirate of Covington.

Rather than raid the high seas, this scallywag haunted the porches of downtown shops, waiting for merchants to set down their crates and customers to leave their parcels unattended. His favorite haunt? The broad, wooden porch of a local shop — a hardware haven where tools, supplies, and curiosities came and went daily.

They say the Porch Pirate never left town, but instead hid his “treasure” in plain sight, tucked among the carts, tools, and weathered timbers of the store’s porch.

Now it’s your turn, brave geocacher, to continue the legend. Search carefully, for the pirate’s secret is still here — head-high and hidden in plain sight. Just be sure to keep a weather eye, lest modern-day porch pirates (or passing muggles) catch you in the act!

About the Cache

This cache is a micro container cleverly hidden on the historic porch of the building. It might require just a touch of “hardware” of your own to retrieve.

Hint: It’s on the porch.
Bigger Hint: This is no bull!
Even Bigger Hint: Let the hunt fuel your desire to find it!

Please use stealth — this is a busy tourist stop, and you don’t want to give away the hiding spot.

After the Find

Once you’ve had a little swing on the porch and signed the log, replace the cache and explore the rest of what the area has to offer. Enjoy your visit to downtown Covington, and may this cache remind you that sometimes, the real treasures are hidden in plain sight.
