🇬🇧 The Algunder Waalweg 🇬🇧
The hike on the Algunder Waalweg takes you along impressive viewpoints, astonishing panoramas and parallel to one of the most important historical sites of the city. From here you will be able to capture many stunning views over the entire Etschtal. The path is even largely still preserved in its original state. This cache should draw a bit of your attention to the Waal, which will accompany you all the way, but especially towards its surrounding geology.
The water of the Algunder Waal originates at an altitude of approximately 2,100 to 2,500 meters from the Spronser Lakes. You can find this lake district northwest of Dorf Tirol, in the middle of the Texelgroup Nature Park. It is also the largest high-alpine lake district in the Eastern Alps. These lakes were formed during the last ice age, the Würm glaciation, when the entire area of the Spronser Lakes was still covered by vast glaciers. It was only about 18,000 to 24,000 years ago that these glaciers reached their maximum extent, resulting in the formation of deep depressions. In these depressions, we find the Spronser Lakes that we know today. From here, the water is now directed for multiple kilometers long to the many orchards along the Algunder Waalweg and is found again in the many irrigation canals there. Here we can see a perfect interplay of human planning and natural geology at the Algunder Waalweg.
However, it is not only at the Spronser Lakes that we can observe the effects of these once mighty glaciers; along the entire route you will have the opportunity to discover one of many glacial erratics. These were also transported away with the expansion of the glaciers and finally left behind when they melted, where they mostly still lie to this day. Thus, granite, gneiss, or porphyry rocks can sometimes be found here that are otherwise not found in the valley area. Furthermore, these glacial erratics help scientists reconstruct the glacier development of that time!
Now let's take a closer look at the Waalweg and the surrounding geology using the following two tasks:
1. The Waals naturally have a very significant impact on the surrounding vegetation, as well as fruit and vegetable farming. However, there is an even more significant impact of these Waals on the local geology, but what is it? Focus mainly on erosion by water and the structural integrity of the paths and how the Waals influence them.
2. If you think you have found one of the glacial erratics, please indicate exactly where you found it and why you believe it is an glacial erratic. Discuss the location and type of rock of the glacial erratic. If you are unsure whether you have found an glacial erratic, I have added a waypoint as a small help, where you are guaranteed to see a very impressive glacial erratic. It is just a few meters below the Algunder Waalweg and is even an officially designated natural monument.
Please send the answers to my geocache profile. You do not have to wait for an answer from me, you may log directly after sending your answers and explinations. If your answers deviate from the actual answers, then don't worry. It's not that big of a deal for me, geocaching is about fun, not about a geography degree. ;)
I would be very happy if you would attach a small picture of the Waalweg to your log. Thank you very much and I wish you a great time on the Algunder Waalweg!
