Geocache Description:

The late afternoon sun slanted through the trees of Pioneer Woods, casting long shadows across the leaf-strewn trails. A group of three friends—Derek, Lisa, and Miguel—had decided to take advantage of the crisp fall weather with a short hike before dinner. The woods were quiet, save for the crunch of leaves underfoot and the occasional chatter of squirrels darting through the underbrush.

As they came around a bend near the old stone picnic shelter, Lisa suddenly raised her hand.
“Did you hear that?” she whispered.

They all froze. From deeper in the woods came a sound—low, guttural, and unlike anything they had ever heard. It wasn’t quite a growl, nor was it a human voice. Miguel frowned, trying to laugh it off, but the unease in his eyes betrayed him.

Then came a crash. A tree branch, thick as Derek’s arm, snapped loudly somewhere up ahead. Birds scattered from the treetops. The three stood rooted to the spot, listening as something massive moved through the brush.

Through the shadows, a figure emerged. It was huge—easily seven or eight feet tall, covered in dark brown hair that caught the last light of the setting sun. Its shoulders were broad, its arms long, and it moved with a surprising grace for its size. The creature stopped at the edge of the trail, no more than thirty yards away.

Its eyes, dark and glinting, met Lisa’s. For a moment, the woods were utterly silent. Derek felt his breath lock in his chest. Miguel instinctively lifted his phone, but the movement drew a deep rumble from the creature’s chest, a sound that made them all stiffen with fear.

Without warning, it turned and vanished back into the trees, moving swiftly and almost silently, as though the forest itself swallowed it whole. The only trace of its presence was the sharp tang of musk lingering in the cool air.

The friends stood in stunned silence until Derek finally said, “We… we’re not telling anyone, right? No one’s gonna believe this.”

But as they hurried back to the parking lot, each of them glanced over their shoulders more than once, convinced the shadows in Pioneer Woods were still watching.
