Der Berliner Mauerweg ist ein etwa 160 km langer Rad- und Fußwanderweg, der weitgehend dem früheren Verlauf der Berliner Mauer um das frühere West-Berlin folgt.
Er wurde zwischen 2002 und 2006 eingerichtet, nachdem das Berliner Abgeordnetenhaus 2001 beschlossen hatte, die ehemalige Grenze sichtbar und begehbar zu machen.
Der Weg verläuft oft auf den ehemaligen Grenzwegen: auf der Westseite meist entlang des ehemaligen Zollwegs, und auf der Ostseite (in Grenznähe) oft entlang des ehemaligen Kolonnenwegs der DDR-Grenztruppen.
Entlang der Strecke gibt es zahlreiche Erinnerungsorte: Gedenkstätten, Infotafeln, verbliebene Mauerreste, Wachtürme, sowie Stelen für die bekannten Mauertoten.
Der Trail ist in 14 Abschnitte unterteilt (zwischen ca. 7 und 21 km Länge), sodass man ihn gut in Etappen erkunden kann.
Der Mauerweg verbindet zentrale Erinnerungsorte wie die Gedenkstätte an der Bernauer Straße, den Gedenkturm Günter Litfin, die „Weißen Kreuze“ am Reichstag und die East Side Gallery.
Heute ist der Weg nicht nur ein Erinnerungsort, sondern auch ein Freizeitweg: beliebt bei Radfahrern, Spaziergängern und Läufern.
Ein interessantes Ereignis: Der „Mauerweglauf / Berlin Wall Race“ findet jährlich statt, über die rund 160 km lange Strecke entlang des Mauerwegs.

The Berlin Wall Trail (Berliner Mauerweg) is a cycling and walking route of approximately 160 km that follows much of the former course of the Berlin Wall around what was then West Berlin.
The idea was approved in 2001 by the Berlin House of Representatives, and the route was developed between 2002 and 2006 to make the former border visible and accessible.
The trail often runs along former border service routes: on the West side largely on the old customs paths, and on the East side along the DDR border troops’ “Kolonnenweg.”
Along the route, one encounters many memorials, signage, preserved wall fragments, old guard towers, and stelae dedicated to the victims who died trying to cross the Wall.
The Trail is divided into 14 sections (each about 7 to 21 km), making it manageable in stages.
Key remembrance sites linked by the trail include the Bernauer Straße Memorial, the Günter Litfin memorial tower, the “White Crosses” near the Reichstag, and the East Side Gallery.
Today, the trail is not just a memorial route but also a popular recreational path used by cyclists, walkers, and runners.
One special event: the annual Berlin Wall Race, a 100-mile (≈ 160 km) run along the route of the Mauerweg, takes place each year.
