Logging requirements

Go to the coordinates and look at the large petrified tree log pictured above. Examine the sides where the curved tree rings are the clearest.

Attention:  Do not enter the road since many cars and buses pass by. The bus stop is nearby.

Answer these questions:

A. How thick are the thinnest and thickest tree rings you can find?

B. Explain how the process of petrification creates a replica of the living tree.

Send me your answers to A and B using the Message Center. I will try to answer you as soon as possible.

You can log your find immediately without waiting for my answer!

Fossil trees

When ancient trees were covered by sediment, pressure over millions of years pushed silica acids into the wood. The silica mineral then replaced the original cellulose structure.  This process is called “petrification.”

In other words, organic living wood was replaced by inorganic non-living minerals.
