Uutelan siirros - Fault of Uutela
Uutelan ulkoilualue on geologisesti monipuolinen, sillä alueella on runsasti paljasta puhdasta rantakalliota laajalla alueella. Rantakalliot pysyvät paremmin jäkälältä paljaina kuin sisämaan kallio.
Maakätkö esittelee kallion pinnassa olevan siirroksen. Siirros on alla olevassa kuvassa keskellä vaakasuoraan kulkeva kallionrako, jossa on sammalta.

Mikä on siirros?
Alla on esimerkkikuva siirroksesta.

Uutelan siirros
Siirroksen tunnistaa helpoiten silloin, kun ympäröivässä kivessä on havaittavissa jatkuva piirre kuten kivijuoni, joka ei jatku samassa kohdassa siirroksen toisella puolella. Tämä on geologinen perustilanne, josta siirros yleensä tunnistetaan. Uutelan siirroksessa on käynyt näin. Kalliota pitkin vesirajan suuntaisesti kulkee pegmaattinen vaalea juoni, joka katkeaa siirroksen kohdalla ja siirtyy siirrosta pitkin pienen matkan, kunnes jatkaa jälleen matkaansa. Tätä kutsutaa siirtymäksi (eng offset).
Pegmatiittijuoni on syntynyt ennen siirrosta.
Fault of Uutela
This earthcache is located in the beautiful landscapes of Niemenapaja in the Uutela outdoor recreational area. The site features a renovated picnic shelter from 2015 and a particularly stunning sea view over Vuosaari Bay. In summer, the area can be crowded with muggles, making it impossible to find the cache.
The Uutela recreational area is geologically diverse, with abundant exposed bare shoreline rock across a wide area. Shoreline rocks tend to remain more free of lichen than inland rock.
The earthcache presents a fault visible on the rock surface. In the image below, the fault is the horizontal crack running across the middle of the rock, covered with moss. Such a crack within a fault zone is called a fault trace, meaning the surface expression of a fault.
The light-colored mineral vein is also closely related to the fault.
This site most likely contains an old fault zone, as there are other faults and folds nearby. At the zero point, you can see several fault traces that run roughly sideways relative to the shoreline.

Tasks - - - Three-dimensional image of the zone here.
1) Determine the direction and length of the pegmatite vein and the fault.
2) What causes the vein to be displaced along the fault (offset)?
3) Voluntary: Take a photo of you or your personal item at the gz without revealing the answers.
You can log the cache after sending the answers via profile page.
What is a fault?
In geology, a fault is a fracture in rock along which blocks of the Earth’s crust have moved relative to each other. Faults can range in length from a few centimeters to hundreds of kilometers. Faults are caused by stress within the Earth’s crust, and most of them form as a result of tectonic forces when tectonic plates collide, move apart, or slide past one another. When stress acting on the bedrock exceeds the brittle strength of the rock, the rock breaks and the blocks move relative to each other. This phenomenon, where rock breaks rather than bends, is called brittle deformation.
Below is an example image of a fault. The word fault refers to the fracture as well as to the rock blocks on either side that have moved. The term fault trace refers only to the fracture where the fault reaches the rock surface. The blocks themselves are located deeper within the bedrock and cannot be directly seen at the surface.

When rock in the Earth’s crust is subjected to compression or stretching, it usually does not break at just one point. Instead, several nearby fractures form, which together are called a fault zone. As a fault develops, movement may first occur along one fracture, later along a neighboring one, eventually forming a series of parallel fault traces that run in the same direction.
Fault in Uutela
A fault is easiest to recognize when a continuous feature in the surrounding rock, such as a mineral vein, does not continue at the same position on the other side of the fault. This is the typical geological situation from which faults are identified. This has occurred at the Uutela fault. Along the shoreline there is a light-colored pegmatite vein running through the bedrock. At the fault, the vein is broken and displaced slightly along the fault before continuing again. This displacement is called an offset.
The pegmatite vein formed before the fault. It was originally straight, but as the rock blocks moved, the ends of the vein gradually separated from each other, forming the offset. The vein itself has not moved at all; instead, the surrounding rock blocks have moved, somewhat like tectonic plates slowly moving relative to each other.
However, if the movement along a fault is small or occurs in a direction that does not cut across the vein at an angle, the vein may pass almost straight across the fault trace without noticeable displacement. For example, a vein crossing a vertical or nearly vertical fault does not always appear offset.
Pegmatites are excellent marker features because they often stand out clearly from the surrounding rock due to their light color and coarse crystal structure.
