In March 2006, the Liveris family decided to raise a giant Greek flag over their family restaurant, hoping to attract more attention and customers.
The steel flagpole is 50 meters high. At the base, the circumference is about one meter, narrowing to just 25 centimeters at the top. The flagpole was specially manufactured in China and shipped to Zakynthos.
The flag itself covers an area of over 670 square meters. Amazingly, its total weight is around 80 kilograms, and it requires an electric motor to raise it.
On May 20, 2007, the flag was entered into the Guinness Book of Records as the world's largest flag. Since then, however, several other countries, including the United States, Saudi Arabia, and Bolivia, have claimed it.
It also makes an interesting landmark on a boat tour along the coast of Zakynthos—but unfortunately, the flag isn't always raised. Is it even still in good condition? Feel free to upload pictures that show the large mast with the waving flag (if you're lucky enough).
