🏰 A kőbányai Csősztorony története
A kőbányai Csősztorony Budapest egyik kevéssé ismert, de annál különlegesebb műemléke. A tornyot az 1800-as évek közepén építették, és eredetileg nem őrtorony vagy katonai célokat szolgáló épület volt, hanem mezőőri lakótorony – innen ered a neve is: csősz = mezőőr.
A 19. században Kőbánya (akkor még önálló településként) mezőgazdasági és szőlőtermelő terület volt. A dombtetőre emelt torony kilátópontként és egyben őrházként szolgált a környező földek felügyeletére. A csősz innen figyelte a termőföldeket, vigyázott a termésre, és jelentette, ha lopás vagy károkozás történt.
A neoreneszánsz stílusú torony valószínűleg az 1850-es években épült. A pontos építési dátuma nem ismert, de szerkezete és kialakítása alapján ebbe a korszakba sorolható. Az építmény két szintes, kör alaprajzú, tetején körerkéllyel, ahonnan ma is csodás kilátás nyílik a környékre.
A városrész fejlődésével a Csősztorony elvesztette eredeti funkcióját, de szerencsére fennmaradt, és a helyiek, valamint a környék történelme iránt érdeklődők körében máig népszerű látványosság.
Ma a torony nem látogatható belülről, de kívülről megtekinthető, és a környék kiváló célpont egy rövidebb kirándulásra vagy geoládázásra.
🏰 The History of the Kőbánya Csősztorony (Watchtower)
The Csősztorony – literally “guard tower” or “field warden’s tower” – is a hidden historical gem located in Kőbánya, a district in Budapest. Despite its modest size, the tower tells a story that reaches back to the mid-19th century, when this area was still mostly covered with vineyards and agricultural fields.
The tower was built as a field guard’s lookout – not a military post, but a place where a “csősz” (a rural guard or watchman) would keep an eye on the surrounding lands. His job was to protect crops from thieves and damage, and to ensure the landowners' property was safe. From the top of the tower, the csősz had a clear view of the area.
Architecturally, the structure reflects a Neo-Renaissance style and is likely from the 1850s, although its exact date of construction is unknown. It is a two-story round building with a small terrace near the top. Though it may look like a fairytale castle turret, it had a very practical function in its day.
As the city of Budapest expanded, the surrounding farmlands disappeared, and the tower lost its original purpose. Luckily, it survived urban development and stands today as a local landmark and reminder of Kőbánya’s rural past.
Although the inside of the tower is not open to the public, it is still worth visiting for its unique charm and the panoramic view of the surrounding area.
