At the posted coordinates, you should look for the grave of John Y. Hooper, a bugler in the American Civil War He enlisted on June 24, 1861 as a musician in Company F, 1st Nebraska Cavalry, and at some point he was promoted to Chief Bugler. He mustered out of service on August 10, 1864.
A chief bugler was the senior enlisted bugler for a regiment (or sometimes for a company) and was responsible for sounding the calls used to control troop movements, signal watches, assemble men, call charges or retreats, and coordinate daily routine (reveille, lights out, etc.). In cavalry units — where rapid movement and signaling were crucial — the bugler’s role was especially important.
