The Shawnee Hills Wine Trail wanders along winding scenic roads and rolling hills on the western side of the Shawnee National Forest. It will bring you to unique small towns, outdoor adventures among sandstone bluffs, and surprising history. Shawnee Hills is the only Federally designated wine grape growing region in Illinois because of how it's special soil and climate affect the grapes.
This stop on the wine trail is at the first and only Meadery in Southern Illinois. Mead, made from honey and infused with local fruits, herbs, and spices is the modern version of the worlds oldest alcohalic beverage. If you decide to give it a try you will discover that it is not as sweet as suggested by the idea of fermented honey.
