 Milanovački slap

Plitvička jezera predstavljaju jedinstveni geološki fenomen formiran kombinacijom tektonskih, hidroloških i biokemijskih procesa. Milanovački slap, koji povezuje jezera Milanovac i Gavanovac, izvrsno ilustrira aktivnu tvorbu sedre (travertina), gdje se kalcijev karbonat (CaCO₃) taloži iz vode bogate CO₂ i kalcijem.

Voda koja dolazi iz vapnenačkih područja sadrži otopljeni CO₂. Kada izbije na površinu i dođe u kontakt sa zrakom, CO₂ isparava, a kalcij karbonat se taloži na mahovinama, algama, grančicama i kamenju. Ovi procesi tvore porozne strukture – sedru koja raste i mijenja oblik barijera i slapova.

Biološki čimbenici, poput mahovina i algi, ubrzavaju taloženje jer služe kao okvir za kristale. Na istom području može se promatrati dinamička sekvenca: svježe naslage, starije, čvršće sedre, te dijelovi koje je voda erodirala ili urušila. To omogućuje uvid u proces oblikovanja sedrenih struktura u stvarnom vremenu.

Boje naslaga variraju: snježno bijela na svježim lomovima i novim naslagama, krem i svijetlosmeđe u starijim slojevima, te zelenkasto-plave nijanse u vodi bogatoj algama i suspendiranim mineralima. Ova paleta čini Milanovački slap živim laboratorijem geoloških procesa.

Mjesto omogućuje neposredno promatranje kemijskog taloženja CaCO₃, osjetljivog na čimbenike poput čistoće vode, temperature, pH i prisutnosti vegetacije, čime se istovremeno uči o geologiji i važnosti zaštite okoliša.

 Milanovački Waterfall

The Plitvice Lakes are a unique geological phenomenon shaped by tectonic, hydrological, and biochemical processes. The Milanovački Waterfall, connecting Milanovac and Gavanovac lakes, provides an excellent example of active travertine (tufa) formation, where calcium carbonate (CaCO₃) precipitates from water rich in CO₂ and calcium.

Water flowing through limestone areas carries dissolved CO₂. When it reaches the surface and mixes with air, CO₂ degasses and calcium carbonate precipitates on mosses, algae, branches, and stones. These processes create porous structures – tufa – that grow and alter the shape of barriers and waterfalls.

Biological factors, such as mosses and algae, accelerate precipitation by providing a template for mineral crystals. Within a short distance, different stages are visible: fresh deposits, older consolidated layers, and areas where water has eroded or collapsed parts of the barrier. This allows direct observation of tufa formation in real time.

Colors vary: snow-white on fresh fractures and new deposits, cream and light-brown in older layers, and greenish-blue tones in water rich in algae and suspended minerals. This palette turns Milanovački Waterfall into a living laboratory of geological processes.

The site allows direct observation of CaCO₃ precipitation, sensitive to factors like water purity, temperature, pH, and vegetation, making it valuable for education and environmental protection.
