The Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve in partnership with the Canberra Bushwalking Club have just completed a number of trails which provide new hiking opportunities for the public. The Mindjagari Track (formerly Loki's Trail) has now been fully signed posted and the trail markings are clear. This cache has been placed along the new Mindjagari trail to encourage hikers to complete the Mount Domain Loop. It is one of our favourite walking areas, and we found ourselves along parts of this trail twice over the last week.
Parking waypoints have been added to this listing, and for the 14 km one-way walk between the car parks, a car shuffle is probably the best option, rather than trying to do an out-and-back in one day.
A longer option with only one car is to otherwise walk back to your starting car park, along the sealed roads which will add 4.5 km to your 14km walk.
The walk varies between very steep ascents and descents, sometimes quite rocky, through to undulating grasslands. The overall ascent is about 1000 m.
To access the cache, your walk from either carpark begins inside the Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve (parking fees apply), and you need to check their website for opening and closing time of their gates. The website can also provide you with any updates or closures of any trails. https://www.tidbinbilla.act.gov.au/
Be prepared:
Although the trails are now well marked, the area is extremely remote, and phone signal is often very limited.
For this reason, it is best to have downloaded an off-line list of caches before you arrive at the reserve.
It is wise to walk in company, rather than alone, and to make sure someone knows where you are heading. Plenty of water, food, sturdy walking shoes and warm clothing are important, since, at this altitude, the weather can change very quickly. Also recommended is a PLB (Personal Locator Beacon).
Note the Terrain rating for this cache.
