In the late 1980s, Henggang Town leaders led a delegation to Hong Kong to attract investment. Hong Kong businesses hosted a ballroom dance for them, much to the embarrassment of the town secretary, who had never set foot on a dance floor. This led the town secretary to realize that attracting investment required not only an industrial park but also a positive cultural environment. In line with the social culture of Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Macau at the time, the town government issued a directive: Leaders should take the lead in learning ballroom dancing.
In 1999, the town government invested 12 million yuan to build the Henggang recreation center, initially featuring a 360-square-meter stage for entertainment and a 9,895-square-meter outdoor ballroom dance floor. After its completion, Henggang's ballroom dancing scene reached a fever pitch, with free dances held every night, with crowds ranging from several thousand to nearly 10,000, creating a truly spectacular spectacle.
In 2025, the upgraded Henggang recreation center, equipped with a comprehensive sports center, subway access, and underground parking, became a core cultural and sports hub for the central Longgang area. Evenings are still filled with people enjoying open-air karaoke, dancing, and even acrobatic performances.
