Geocache Description:

💀 Georgetown Cemetery – Spirits of Pottsboro Past

Welcome to Georgetown Cemetery, one of Pottsboro’s oldest resting places—where red clay, lake breeze, and a little frontier grit all meet up under the oaks. The buryin’ ground traces back to the Georgetown community that predated modern Pottsboro, a settlement tied to early ranching, the nearby military road, and families who carved out a life along the Red River.

Local lore still swears that on a calm Lake Texoma night you might spot a lantern drifting between the cedar rows. Could be an old cowhand still checking his herd… or just the moon playin’ tricks. Either way, it’ll sharpen your geocaching senses. 👻

⚰️ Redneck Advisory

Watch for stickers, snakes, and skeeters—they’re all locals.

After a gully-washer, this red dirt’ll eat boots for breakfast.

If something whispers your name… it’s probably the wind. Probably.

📜 Bonus History Snippets (Real Folks, Real Markers)

Col. George Robertson Reeves (1826–1882). Texas legislator, Grayson County sheriff and tax collector, later a Confederate officer; Reeves County out west is named for him. Reeves donated land here for the cemetery and is buried inside the grounds—there’s even a Texas Historical Commission marker standing at Georgetown Cemetery itself.

The Georgetown Community. The cemetery preserves what’s left of the old Georgetown/Reevesville area northwest of today’s Pottsboro—its story is tied to early militia activity, frontier roads, and companies raised at the Civil War’s outset in Grayson County.

Veterans Through the Generations. Walk the rows and you’ll spot stones for Civil War soldiers and later veterans, with memorials spanning well into the 20th century—one reason this place reads like a pocket-sized local history book. (See the cemetery rollups and memorial listings for Georgetown Cemetery in Pottsboro.)

> If you enjoy digging (figuratively, y’all) into the past, the Georgetown Cemetery association notes this is a long-standing, carefully kept ground—with newer sections added over time to the west of the oldest plots.

Tip your hat, sign the log, and say howdy to the folks who built Grayson County.
