  1. Σε αυτό το σημείο μπορείς να δεις πολλά απολιθώματα του ίδιου είδους. Ποια από τα απολιθώματα που φαίνονται παρακάτω είναι αυτά;
  2. Πόσο ευρύ και πόσο μακρύ είναι περίπου το εύρος στο οποίο βρίσκεις αυτό το είδος απολιθώματος;
  3. Προσπάθησε να πάρεις ένα απολίθωμα στο χέρι σου. Γιατί δεν μπορείς; Πώς δημιουργήθηκε το απολίθωμα;

Logging requirements

To log this EarthCache, please answer the following questions on site. Send your answers to me via Messenger or my profile. You do not need to wait for log approval.

A photo of you or your GPS at the EarthCache coordinates is required to log the EarthCache. Logs without a photo will be deleted.

  1. You can see several fossils of the same species at this location. Which of the fossils pictured below are they?
  2. Approximately how wide and how long is the area where you find this type of fossil?
  3. Try to pick up a fossil. Why can't you do it? How was the fossil formed?

Fossils, derived from the Latin “fossilis,” meaning “excavated,” are evidence of past life from Earth's history that is more than 10,000 years old. They can be assigned to a geological age before the beginning of the Holocene. These remains, which can include plants, animals, or other organisms, provide insights into the evolutionary development and environmental conditions of past times.

By studying fossils, geologists can not only trace the diversity of species on Earth in different eras, but also gain important information about climatic changes and geological processes that have shaped the Earth over millions of years. Fossils are therefore crucial for understanding the history of the Earth and biological evolution.

Through the process of fossilization, the fossil is firmly attached to the rock and has become part of it. After the shellfish died, its remains were buried under layers of sediment. Over time, pressure and heat altered the organic matter until it was replaced by mineral deposits. This turned the shell itself into stone. The soft parts of the shellfish have long since decomposed, and the shells have either been transformed into stone or left behind a replica of the original, known as a stone core.

The fossil itself is therefore no longer the original shell, but a silicified or fossilized imprint in the rock. This process binds the fossil indissolubly to the surrounding rock, meaning that there is no separation between the original shell and the rock. It is therefore impossible to “detach” the fossil without damaging the rock. To expose the fossil, the rock around it must be carefully removed.
