I have enjoyed the SideTracked series so I thought it was time to add my own! Sadly our local station is no longer with us but the line has reincarnated into the fantastic Downs Link cycle path which runs from Guildford to Shoreham-by-Sea
The Steyning Line ran from Horsham to Shoreham-by-Sea along the Adur valley.
The line was closed in March 1966 and left abandoned until the long awaited Steyning bypass was built in 1981. The train line would have followed the route of the road (the Downs Link cycle path veers off and takes a much safer route along Kings Barn Lane). An in-depth history of the Steyning line can be found on YouTube: 'Tracing The Rails' (Episode 3) here
During its 100 year history the station was used by many day pupils attending the local Steyning Grammar School (including my FIL in the 1950s) and visitors to the weekly farmers market held on a Wednesday. The animals were transported by train for auction. The auction hall can be found a short walk away but there is no remaining evidence of the station itself.
