Questions

Identify three different mineral colors in the rock. Which minerals do you think they are?

Are the mineral grains uniform or varied in size? What does this tell you about the cooling rate?

Why is this granite visible at the surface today? Which geological processes brought it here?

説明 / Description(日本語)

English Description

The rock you see here is Hiroshima Granite, a common and geologically significant rock throughout the Hiroshima region.

Granite forms deep underground, when magma cools slowly beneath the surface.
This slow cooling allows large crystals to grow, giving granite its coarse-grained texture.

Main minerals:

  • Quartz – clear to gray

  • Feldspar – white to pinkish

  • Mica – shiny black (biotite) or silvery (muscovite)

The Hiroshima Granite formed during the Late Cretaceous (80–90 million years ago), when Japan was part of an active subduction zone.
As tectonic forces uplifted the region and erosion removed the overlying rocks, the granite became exposed at the surface.

Because of its durability and fine appearance, Hiroshima Granite is widely used for monuments, temples, and memorials in the city — including several at the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park.
