Questions

Which parts of the lantern show the strongest discoloration? What do those areas have in common?

How does the surface of the weathered area appear — rough, smooth, or grainy?

What processes do you think caused this weathering — water, pollution, air exposure, or mineral reactions?

説明 / Description(日本語)

English Description

This granite lantern is made of Hiroshima Granite, a durable rock composed of quartz, feldspar, and mica.
Although granite is hard, it undergoes weathering when exposed to air and rain over long periods.

The observed changes result from several processes:

  • Chemical weathering – Feldspar reacts with rainwater and carbon dioxide, forming clay minerals such as kaolinite.

  • Physical weathering – Temperature changes cause expansion and contraction, creating microcracks.

  • Urban weathering – Air pollution and acid rain dissolve minerals and leave dark stains.

The darker, rougher zones at the base of the lantern indicate:

  • Frequent contact with moisture

  • Iron oxidation and possible biological growth

  • Gradual disintegration of feldspar-rich surfaces

These features show how rocks at the surface continue to interact with Earth's atmosphere, even within a city setting.
