English Description
The dark stone used in this monument is known in Japan as “Kuro-mikage-ishi,” or black granite.
However, geologically it is not true granite, but a gabbro or diorite.
Granite forms from silica-rich (felsic) magma and contains light-colored minerals such as quartz, feldspar, and mica.
In contrast, gabbro forms from iron- and magnesium-rich (mafic) magma and is composed mainly of plagioclase, pyroxene, and hornblende.
These minerals give it its dense structure and dark color. Because it forms deep within the Earth, the crystals grow slowly and become visible to the naked eye.
The high density and ability to take a strong polish make this stone a preferred material for monuments and gravestones in Japan.
The term “black granite” is therefore a trade name, not a scientific one.
While both true granite and gabbro are intrusive igneous rocks formed by slow crystallization underground, they represent opposite chemical extremes of magma evolution.
Granite comes from silica-rich magma, whereas gabbro forms from iron- and magnesium-rich magma.
Here you can observe both rock types in one place — two contrasting products of the same geological process that built the Earth’s crust.
