🌊 Kaaimans Adventure – In the Footsteps of the Outeniqua Choo Tjoe
Start your adventure at the Wilderness Beach parking area and follow the sound of the waves toward the old railway tracks. The path leads you through a mysterious tunnel – a gateway to another time – until you suddenly find yourself standing before the majestic Kaaimans River Bridge. From here, breathtaking views open up over the mouth of the Kaaimans River and the vast ocean beyond – a sight you won’t soon forget.
On your way, you’ll pass the abondoned restaurant and a mysterious cave, home to Clifford since 2006 – a friendly, fascinating character who welcomes visitors to explore his cave for just R25. If you’re lucky, he might even share a few of his stories from days gone by…
But your real goal lies a little more hidden:
🔎 The Geocache is tucked away, below knee height, at the beginning of the bridge – so there’s no need to step onto the bridge itself.
Before you leave, take a moment to soak in the history that lingers in the air:
Until 2006, the legendary Outeniqua Choo Tjoe – Africa’s last regularly scheduled passenger steam train – crossed this very bridge, connecting George and Knysna. The rhythmic chug of the engine once carried thousands of travelers each year, many of them visitors from faraway lands. Then came the landslides of 2006, and the line fell silent…
💡 But there’s good news!
On October 6th, 2025, Classic Rail announced the revival of this historic railway line. The route between Knysna and George will reopen in two phases – first Knysna to Sedgefield, then Sedgefield to George. Soon, the nostalgic sound of the steam train may once again echo across the Kaaimans Bridge – perhaps while you’re standing there, signing the logbook!
Do you want to feel the magic of this place before the train returns?
Then lace up your boots, charge your GPS, and set off on a journey between sea, history, and adventure. 🌍🚂✨
