GIS Day

GIS Day

History of GIS

GIS Day is dedicated to sharing, teaching, and inspiring others with GIS. Esri president and cofounder Jack Dangermond credits activist Ralph Nader as the person who inspired the first formal GIS Day in 1999.

ESRI Link to The Rest of the Story of GIS:

It was through a staff development workshop sponsored by ESRI that a co-teacher and I obtained our first Garmin handheld GPS receivers and the ESRI mapping software for our school.

We attended a GIS conference in 2004 where we learned about Geocaching and we’ve been Geocachers ever since.

The conference and software encouraged us to create a GIS Club and we partnered with the Carrollton Parks and Recreation Department to create a walking trail proposal which we mapped out using the ESRI software. We used Geocaching to teach our students how to use the handheld GPS receivers to take waypoints for their project. Our club consisted of five students, one of which was in a wheelchair. They presented their proposal to the City of Carrollton and their walking trail was built. The adults were amazed at the quality of the students’ presentation.

We participated in GIS Day events at a local community college where we taught Geocaching. GIS Day and Geographic Awareness Week overlap on the calendar and how they are used to better our world. Earth Caches are definitely tied into Geographic awareness,

There are two GIS Day events in Edinburg on Nov. 21st:

  1.  GIS Day 2025 - RGVAUG at the Dustin Michael Sekula Memorial Library! This in-person event will bring together GIS enthusiasts, professionals, and students to celebrate the power of geospatial technology.
