Observe the monument’s stone closely. Can you see small shiny flakes? Describe their color and reflection.
-
How do you think these shiny minerals affect the appearance and weathering of the stone?

Description
This monument is likely made of granite or a related intrusive rock.
Granite consists mainly of quartz, feldspar, and mica.
Mica gives the stone its characteristic sparkle and plays an important role in both its beauty and its weathering.
Mica has a layered structure, allowing it to split into thin sheets.
Biotite (black mica) gives dark sparkle, while muscovite (white mica) gives silvery reflection.
As mica flakes weather and detach, the stone’s surface becomes rougher, altering both its texture and shine over time.
Geological Background
Mica is a sheet silicate mineral common in igneous and metamorphic rocks.
Its layers are bonded by potassium and hydroxyl groups, giving it flexibility and a glassy luster.
Mica influences how rocks expand, crack, and weather — one reason granite monuments age in distinctive ways.
