Observe the cracks or lines visible on the rock surface. In which direction do they run?
-
How do you think these joints formed — mainly by internal forces (tectonic stress) or external forces (waves and weathering)?

Description
Along this coast, ocean waves have sculpted the jointed granite.
Joints are natural fractures formed as the rock cooled or as tectonic stresses acted on it.
These fractures create planes of weakness where waves, salt, and weathering attack, carving the smooth, angled shapes you see today.
Formation of Joints
-
Cooling and Contraction
As granite slowly cools from magma, it contracts.
Internal stress builds until the rock fractures — forming joints.
-
Tectonic Stress
Later tectonic movement can create new joints as the solid rock is pulled or compressed.
-
Enlargement by the Sea
Sea water enters the joints, expanding them through salt crystallization and freeze-thaw cycles.
Repeated wave impact polishes the surface into smooth, rounded slopes.
Geological Context
The bedrock around Miyajima consists of Mesozoic granite, about 100 million years old.
This granite is heavily jointed, and the sea exploits those fractures through wave erosion.
Depending on the joint orientation, you can see angled surfaces and hollow forms shaped by the ocean.
What You Can Learn
At this site, you can see how internal geological structure (joints) and external marine erosion interact.
Over geological time, this interplay shapes the rugged yet graceful coastline of Miyajima.
