Blackthorn (Prunus spinosa), or sloe, is a shrubby tree that grows to 6-7m, and is often found planted as hedgerows, though it will also grow naturally in scrub and woodland. It has small oval toothed leaves. The white flowers appear in early spring, with dark blue-purple fruits in autumn. For cachers, the most significant feature is the extremely sharp spines that grow along the branches.
The berries are used to make sloe gin and preserves, although they generally aren't eaten as fruits. Traditionally, blackthorn wood is used to make Irish shillelaghs (walking sticks/cudgals) and is also associated with witches wands and staffs.
