Geocache Description:

At the edge of the village of St-Clémentin, on the Santiago de Compostela pilgrim route, stands the Notre Dame de Grâce chapel. It’s better known as the Rose bush (Des Rosiers) chapel.

It is open to visit on the first and third Sundays of the month, Easter to November.

At the back, you’ll find a spring with a fountain. Parishioners would gather around the fountain on Easter Day. Churches together with fountains are not uncommon in the Poitiers diocese.

Built in the 12th century, it has been restored in recent years. The chapel is mentioned as belonging to Abbey Saint-Florent Abbey nest Saumur in a papal confirmation from 1186.

At the front is a timbered frame porch supported by two stone pillars and surrounded by a low wall. The western gable is topped by a single bell tower with two bells. The doorway, with decorated and studded doors, has a peephole grille bearing the letters RS.

As you enter the chapel, you’ll see a remarkable set of wall paintings. These were uncovered during the restoration and are thought to date from the 13th and 15th century. The better preserved painting on the right is the massacre of the innocents / flight from Egypt. On the left is a rather patchy ‘Last Supper’.

The 12th century single nave has a pointed barrel vault. Against the north wall, a 13th-century sarcophagus bears coats of arms - a lance, and a sword. The two small altars at the end of the nave were formerly dedicated to Saint Anthony and Saint Roch.

The choir, higher than the nave, has ribbed vaults and dates from the 15th century. At the back, high up, is a funerary ornament bearing the coats of arms of the La Ville de Férolles family and those of the Mauras family.

The Rosiers chapel and its fountain were classified as Historical Monuments in 1994.
