Here at Port Kembla you’re standing beside a key part of Wollongong’s industrial landscape. For generations, this area has contributed materials, jobs and innovation to the Illawarra, evolving as technology and demand have changed. The region has long been proudly called Steel City a nickname that reflects its strong steelmaking heritage and connection to heavy industry along the harbour. Today, Wollongong is described as transforming from steel city to smart city highlighting new investment, research and modern manufacturing.
Construction of major steel facilities began here in the late 1920s. During World War II the site supported Australia’s wartime production. In the decades that followed, Port Kembla became one of the country’s most important steelmaking centres.
