Hidden in the branches, this cache celebrates one of California’s cleverest residents: the California Scrub-Jay!
The California Scrub-Jay is a bold, blue-and-gray songbird found throughout oak woodlands, coastal scrub, and backyards across California. Unlike many birds, these jays don’t migrate; they stay local all year long. They’re famous for their memory. A single bird can stash thousands of acorns and remember where they are after months!
They’re also talkative neighbors, known for their raspy calls and mischievous curiosity. Scientists say they’re among the few animals capable of planning for the future, making them true masterminds of the bird world.
As you search the small tree next to the metal box, imagine a jay hopping nearby, watching to see if you can find its hidden treasure. Please replace the cache carefully and be respectful of the area.
Fun Fact: The “scrub” in their name comes from their favorite habitat which is coastal scrubland, not their ability to clean.
Happy caching, and may your finds be as sharp as a jay’s memory!
Congrats to user BDZT for the FTF!
