In the 1940s, Katie and George settled on this property. The lush pastures, surrounded by the picturesque farmlands of Happy Valley offered peaceful country life. Legend has it that the original settlers in the early 1900s referred to this secluded valley as a happy haven from British rule. This valley seemed the perfect place to raise a family, where they could grow up with a reverence for nature and all it provided.
Katie and George's family nourished themselves with the fruits of their own labour. They grew their own produce and raised cattle, chickens and goats. Like many farming communities, they shared the bounty with their neighbours and their neighbours responded in kind.
As lovers of beauty, they also tended a flower garden, in which George grew his prized gladiolas. George recognized the need for a more reliable water source to irrigate their garden, so he decided to unearth a pond. As time passed, the pond became inhabited with freshwater fish and the neighbourhood kids gathered here to cast their rods. The pond was never a well-kept secret from the community.
Katie relished spending her time outdoors, basking in the sunshine. Her beloved pond was her sanctuary. Local rumours suggest that Katie, a mischievous spirit, could be spotted from time to time enjoying her pond "au naturel". Naturally, this pool became fondly referred to as Katie's Pond.
