Geocache Description:

Local Lore

🕰️ Historical background

  • The depot building, known as the Katy Depot for the Missouri–Kansas–Texas Railroad (often called the “Katy”), is located at 101 E. Main St., Denison, Texas.

  • Denison itself was founded in 1872 in conjunction with the Katy Railroad.

  • One historical account says the depot was built in 1911 (or the “current building” dates around then) and has been revitalized in recent years.

👻 Ghost / paranormal lore

  • According to a local story, “Over the years, hands, feet, toes… etc would get caught in between the rail cars and might need to be amputated. So, a graveyard was set up somewhere behind the Katy Depot, and they would hold funerals for everybody’s appendages that were lost.”

  • Reports of “weird feelings” when people walk by the depot, and dogs howling at night in that vicinity.

  • The depot is also the starting point for a local ghost tour  that moves down Main Street, covering haunted spots including the depot area.
