Volunteers
December 5th might seem like just another day, but it’s packed with interesting events, birthdays, and historical moments. Did you know that on this day in 1933, the United States ended Prohibition with the ratification of the 21st Amendment? Or that Walt Disney, the creator of Mickey Mouse, was born on this day in 1901?
December 5th also marks International Volunteer Day, celebrating the efforts of volunteers worldwide. From groundbreaking scientific achievements to cultural milestones, this date holds a treasure trove of fascinating facts.
It’s a well-known fact that geocaching is a community-based game. After all, what would the game be without creative cache owners and the engaged cachers who log their finds?
Another vital aspect of the game is the collection of geocaching community volunteers who dedicate their time, passion, and talent to support the worldwide geocaching community.
Reviewers review and publish geocaches that meet geocaching guidelines
Moderators guide and monitor participation in the Geocaching Forums
Translators translate geocaching content into languages other than English
EarthCache reviewers use their expertise in geology to review and publish EarthCaches
The geocaching community currently has nearly 400 volunteers who support geocachers and coach new players—all for the love of the game. Though most volunteers are also active players, a large portion of the community hasn’t yet had the chance to meet them.
Every Geocacher who submits and maintains a cache or event is also a Geocaching Volunteer. YES, YOU ARE A VOLUNTEER 😊
And then there are volunteers for Waymarking, another part of the Geocaching world. The volunteers in Waymarking belong to one of three positions within a group. A group must be created before a Waymark category can be created. The group members are in charge of the category.
What are the different Group ranks?
There are 3 primary Group rankings, each with unique permissions relating to category management.
Leader: This is the creator of the Group and the highest-ranking member. A Leader can invite, promote, and assign permissions to other Group members. The Leader must be a Premium Member.
Officer: An Officer is promoted by the Leader and assists in maintenance of the Group's category. The officer has the ability to participate in votes that affect Group membership as well as new waymark review. The Officer must also be a Premium Member.
Member: Members offer suggestions to the Leader and Officers on Group and category issues but has no management permissions.
Every Geocacher is potentially a Waymarking volunteer. Why? Because Every Geocacher CAN submit a Waymark location to its corresponding category to be reviewed by the managing group for publication. You need TWO photos – an up close and a wide view photo of the item being submitted. Each category has its own submission form and requirements regarding what the Waymark group that manages that category wants included.
We are a friendly group that enjoy sharing stories of our Geocache experiences. We help each other if we’re having difficulty finding a cache, solving a puzzle or creating and publishing a cache.
