Geocache Description:

Vodarna Kleče

Ljubljana je zaradi sestave tal in bogatih zalog podtalnice ena redkih evropskih prestolnic, kjer približno sto tisoč gospodinjstev prejema vodo brez kemičnih postopkov čiščenja.

Due to the composition of the soil and the rich groundwater reserves, Ljubljana is one of the few European capitals where approximately one hundred thousand households receive water without chemical treatment processes. The oldest and largest water plant in the capital area is located in Kleče: it has been in operation since 1890 and is the heart of the water supply network, providing approximately two-thirds of all water in the central water supply system.

Despite the rich reserves, the water under the Ljubljana region is not unlimited. As Skitko explains, "we can pump out about as much as it flows into the area", so before setting up a new pumping station, test pumping and measurements must be carried out to show how much water can be pumped out without the groundwater level dropping too much or the soil starting to settle. During the day, between eight and ten wells operate in Kleče, pumping at an average flow rate of 85 liters per second, and the number of working wells is most affected by the consumption of the townspeople.
