Geocache Description:

Castillo de Jijona rises on a prominent rocky outcrop overlooking the town of Jijona in the province of Alicante, on the Costa Blanca. Historically, it served as a strategic defensive point, but it is also an important geological and natural site where one can observe how geological processes have shaped the landscape and significantly influenced how humans have used the area.

Geological setting

The castle is situated within the External Betic Zone, which forms the outermost part of the Betic Cordillera in the southeastern Iberian Peninsula. This geological unit developed through complex tectonic processes during the collision of the African and Eurasian lithospheric plates, which displaced and deformed large bodies of marine sediments, mainly limestones, dolomites and pelitic materials from the Mesozoic and younger Cenozoic.

The External Betic Zone is divided into two main subunits:

  • Prebetic
Closer to the former continental margin, associated with shallower marine environments.
  • Subbetic
Located farther from the continent, representing deeper marine conditions.

The bedrock beneath the castle consists of rocks deposited in the transitional zone between land and sea, primarily carbonates that later underwent significant deformation during mountain-building phases.

Weathering and karstification

The carbonate rocks of the area, such as limestone and dolomite, are subject to karstification. This chemical process occurs when water enriched with carbon dioxide reacts with the minerals in the rock, dissolving them and forming characteristic karst features including lapies, sinkholes, deep fractures, caves and depressions. These processes played an essential role in shaping the rocky prominence on which the castle stands.

Weathering and karstification gradually widen fractures and weak points in the rock mass, creating rugged terrain with sharp edges, cavities and hollows. These geomorphological features strongly influence the local hydrology, as water infiltrates the subsurface, flows underground and feeds several springs.

And now to what you need to do to successfully log this cache. Your task will be to answer the tasks below and send me the answers to my email - geovasek01@gmail.com. Please write "Jijona" in the subject line and don't forget to include your nickname in the message. If there is any confusion, I will get back to you. You can log in as soon as you receive the answers.

Your tasks

1) What is the name of the geological region that forms the southeast of the Iberian Peninsula?

2) Walk around the hill and describe the types of rocks you can find here and their characteristics (appearance, hardness, or color). Are there any differences? If so, describe them.

3) Observe the surface features of the rocks. Can you find evidence of chemical weathering or karstification? Give an example and briefly explain how this phenomenon occurs.

4) Take a photo of yourself or your personal item around the castle and attach it to the log!
