Natural gas was discovered offshore near Mossel Bay in 1969, but it took until the 1980s for the project to be developed. The Mossgas plant was built to turn offshore gas into fuel using gas-to-liquids technology. It officially started operating in 1992. In 2002, Mossgas became part of PetroSA.
The offshore gas fields have declined over the years, but the refinery remains an important part of the area’s industrial history.
There is parking near the cache. You have to turn onto the entrance road.
