Il Santuario della Beata Vergine di Screncis. Non è possibile stabilire con certezza quando e come abbia avuto origine: le prime notizie scritte risalgono al 1400, ma risale probabilmente a periodi precedenti. La tradizione vuole che nel luogo ove ora si trova il Santuario della Beata Vergine esistesse un infossamento del terreno dove un pastore, mentre sorvegliava il gregge, scorse mezza nascosta l’immagine della Madonna col Bambino: raccontò il fatto in paese e l’immagine venne portata nella chiesa parrocchiale, ma il giorno dopo fu trovata esattamente nel luogo in cui era stata scoperta; venne allora portata nella chiesetta della Santissima Trinità, ma anche in questo caso la cosa si ripeté.
Allora in quella località venne innalzato un capitello e successivamente una piccola cappella ampliata nel 1770. Durante gli scavi qui condotti nel 1857 si ritrovarono numerose ossa umane, forse una delle testimonianze delle battaglie che funestavano il Friuli. Si può dedurre che si sia approfittato dell’infossamento già esistente per seppellirvi i morti.
Incerta è anche l’origine del nome della località SCRENCIS (anticamente SCHRENGIS oppure SCHRENCHIS). Una prima sostiene che derivi dallo slavo SKITI o SKRINJA, che significano rispettivamente “nascondere” e “cassetta o scrigno”, ed alluderebbe al miracoloso ritrovamento. La seconda ipotesi suppone che Screncis derivi dal gallico CRENNO, che significa “albero” ed indicherebbe l’esistenza di un villaggio poi scomparso, del quale però non esistono attestazioni. Nel corso del secolo scorso il santuario ha assunto l’aspetto attuale.
L’edificio è il frutto dell’attività di tutti gli abitanti dei paesi limitrofi e per questo motivo ogni anno, dall’8 al 15 settembre, in questo santuario vengono ospitate tutte le parrocchie della foranìa di Codroipo. Il quadro della Madonna, motivo della devozione di tante persone, non ha alcun pregio artistico; è in legno dipinto a colori naturali e raffigura la Madonna che con la sinistra sostiene ai fianchi il Bambino e con la destra ne avvolge i piedini.
Durante l’assedio di Vienna del 1683 da parte dei Turchi, Bertiolo divenne un accampamento militare turco: alla fine del secolo scorso è stata rinvenuta una necropoli di discrete proporzioni alla profondità di un metro circa, dove si distinguevano ancora residui di calce viva: vi si trovarono corti pugnali e stiletti posti sotto la tibia della gamba sinistra delle salme, tipici nella sepolture dei soldati turchi; ciondoli con la mezzaluna e monete d'oro.

The origin of the name SCRENCIS (formerly SCHRENGIS or SCHRENCHIS) is also uncertain. One theory holds that it derives from the Slavic SKITI or SKRINJA, meaning "to hide" and "box or chest," respectively, and alludes to the miraculous discovery. The second hypothesis suggests that Screncis derives from the Gaulish CRENNO, meaning "tree," and indicates the existence of a village that later disappeared, of which, however, no evidence exists. Over the course of the last century, the sanctuary took on its current appearance.
The building is the result of the work of all the inhabitants of the surrounding villages, and for this reason, every year, from September 8th to 15th, this sanctuary hosts all the parishes of the deanery of Codroipo. The painting of the Madonna, a source of devotion for so many people, has no artistic value; It is made of wood painted in natural colors and depicts the Madonna holding the Child at her sides with her left hand and wrapping her right hand around His feet.
During the siege of Vienna by the Turks in 1683, Bertiolo became a Turkish military camp. At the end of the last century, a necropolis of considerable size was discovered at a depth of about one meter, where residues of quicklime were still visible. Short daggers and stilettos placed under the shins of the left legs of the deceased, typical in the burials of Turkish soldiers, were found; along with crescent-shaped pendants and gold coins.
