Denman Wildlife Area is one of those places people drive past for years without realizing what they are missing. Tucked near the base of the Table Rocks and along the Rogue River, this 1,700+ acre wildlife area mixes ponds, marshes, grasslands, oak woodlands, and riparian corridors into a wild patch of Southern Oregon. From the right spot you can catch beautiful views toward the Table Rocks and across the Rogue Valley while listening to birds singing in the wetlands.
A web of trails and old roads wanders through the area. Some are signed interpretive routes, others are simple footpaths that have formed over years of hikers, birders, anglers, and dog walkers exploring the property. Depending on your route you may pass seasonal ponds, old Camp White ammo bunkers, quiet stretches of river, or open grassland where raptors hunt over the fields. It is easy to turn a quick cache grab into a longer wander if you feel like stretching your legs.
Your geocache adventure is within walking distance of one of these paths, in a spot that offers a nice look at the surrounding landscape. You should not need to trample through sensitive habitat or push deep into brush. As always in a wildlife area, respect closures and signs, stay aware of your surroundings, and be extra cautious during hunting seasons when sharing the area with waterfowl and upland game hunters. Note that this trailhead requires a parking permit, though there is street parking a short distance away.
Please make sure to return the container and its camouflage exactly as you found them so the cache can stay hidden and continue to introduce future visitors to Denman Wildlife Area. If you pack anything in, pack it out, and consider picking up an extra piece of litter on your way back to the trail.
