Historic Hanley Farm is the kind of place that makes you want to slow down and imagine what the Rogue Valley looked like more than a century ago. Established in 1857, this 37 acre working farm sits along Jackson Creek between Jacksonville and Central Point, and is now owned and operated by the Southern Oregon Historical Society. The old farmhouse, barns, and fields preserve the story of the Hanley family and the early agricultural development of the valley, all while still hosting living history events, classes, and community gatherings. Your geocache adventure is nearby, but not on the farm itself. Please respect the property. There is no need to go on their property to access this geocache. Do not park at Hanley Farm to look for this cache unless you are already there attending an event. Instead, use a safe roadside spot and fully pull off the pavement before you begin your search. This stretch of road can be busy at times, so make sure your vehicle is well clear of traffic and keep an eye on kids and pets as you get in and out of your cachemobile.
From your parking spot you will be within walking distance of ground zero, with views toward the historic farmstead and surrounding fields. Take a moment to picture the wagons, orchards, and early farm work that once defined this area, then switch into geocacher mode and start asking yourself, “If I were hiding something here, where would I put it” There is no need to cross fences or enter any posted areas. The cache can be found from public right of way with a bit of observation and care.
If you happen to be in the area during December, check the local listings for Hanley Farm’s Winter Wonderland holiday lights. For several evenings each season the farm lights up with tens of thousands of bulbs, turning this already picturesque property into a glowing holiday walk through history.
Once you make the find, sign the log, enjoy the view of this historic Southern Oregon landmark, and return the container exactly as you found it so future seekers can enjoy the same blend of local history and geocaching.
