Geocache Description:

The memorial situated in Watchwood Plantation, Calverton, commemorates the deaths of three Polish airmen who crashed there.

On October 13th 1940 a Fairey Battle aeroplane of 300 Mosovian Squadron was returning to its base at RAF Swinderby following a successful bombing raid. The damaged plane came down near Calverton with the tragic loss of all three men in the crew.

The memorial is for pilot Flight Lieutenant Jan Gebicki; rear gunner Sergeant Edward Morawa and wireless operator Sergeant Tadeusz Egierski. All three men are buried in Wilford Hill cemetery, Nottingham.

The memorial was given a makeover in 1995 by the  Calverton branch of the Royal British Legion. It is well cared for and maintained by members of the Calverton and District Royal British Legion. There is a yearly visit the day before Remembrance Sunday with representatives from the Polish community among those coming to pay their respects

The Cache

The cache is placed with kind permission of Forestry England

Please note that this is a working forest and that all people should adhere to any safety signage and closures they may come across on site.

There are various parking options and routes to the memorial. The easiest is to park at the waypoint listed. This is a small car park and often busy, but there is usually space there or at the roadside on Gravelly Hollow (a no through road). From the parking area follow the main trail. This will lead you close to the memorial. Alternatively this can be reached (unless too muddy) via a short diversion from The Canny Explorers lovely series at I'm Still Standing.

At the posted coordinates you will find the memorial. There is a slate with white writing as part of the memorial. You will need information from the slate to determine the final coordinates.

The cache can be found at N 53 03 ABC  W001 05.DEF
