Geocache Description:

Euonymus alatus is the scientific name for what you probably know as Burning Bush. It is highly invasive in NJ due to it easily spreading by seeds dispersed by birds and quickly forming dense thickets. Due to this, it crowds out native plants, reduces biodiversity, and does not provide a significant food source or habitat for local wildlife.

Here in Muriel Hepner Park there are acres of preserved land whose understory (the vegetation that grows under the tree canopy) is composed primarily of burning bush. Please do NOT plant burning bush on your property and consider removing any that may already be established. Our local ecosystem will thank you :-)

This geocache should be a quick and easy find off a lesser known trail on the south side of Mary Ave. While you're there you could also check out some of the Blue Trail that follows the old Morris Canal Towpath.

There are some trinkets and a travel bug in the cache for whoever is the first to find. Enjoy!

Note the small, red, oval, opposite leaves on greenish twigs with brown 'wings.' It is also known as 'winged burning bush.'
