CASTILLO DE SAN SALVADOR DE LA PUNTA - GUARDIANES DE LA BAHÍA
A la entrada de la bahía de La Habana, frente a frente con el Castillo del Morro, se levanta el Castillo de San Salvador de La Punta, conocido simplemente como La Punta. Hoy lo vemos como un lugar tranquilo junto al Malecón, pero durante siglos fue una pieza clave en la defensa de la ciudad.
La idea de construirlo surgió en el siglo XVI, cuando La Habana empezó a ser un puerto importante para la flota española. Piratas y corsarios merodeaban el Caribe en busca de tesoros, y la Corona decidió proteger la bahía con un sistema de fortalezas. Así nacieron el Morro, La Cabaña… y también La Punta.
La Punta se terminó de construir a comienzos del siglo XVII. Sus gruesos muros de piedra caliza y sus cañones apuntando al mar tenían una misión clara: impedir que los barcos enemigos entrasen libremente en la bahía. Durante años, desde aquí se vigiló cada embarcación que se acercaba a La Habana, lista para abrir fuego si era necesario.
Una de las curiosidades más interesantes es que, antiguamente, se tendía una enorme cadena entre el Castillo del Morro y La Punta. Esa cadena se alzaba para bloquear el paso de los barcos enemigos. Imagina la escena: de noche, la bocana de la bahía cerrada por una cadena de hierro, vigilada por soldados y cañones en ambas orillas.
Con el tiempo, las amenazas cambiaron y la tecnología militar avanzó, pero el castillo siguió teniendo diferentes usos. Ha sobrevivido a huracanes, cambios políticos y muchos años de salitre y viento. Hoy es parte del paisaje cotidiano de los habaneros y uno de los lugares más fotogénicos del paseo marítimo.

SAN SALVADOR DE LA PUNTA FORTRESS - GUARDIANS OF THE BAY
At the entrance to Havana Bay, facing Morro Castle on the opposite side, stands the Castillo de San Salvador de La Punta, usually called La Punta. Today it feels like a quiet spot by the Malecón, but for centuries it was a key piece of the city’s defense system.
The idea of building this fortress dates back to the 16th century, when Havana became an important port for the Spanish fleet. Pirates and privateers were very active in the Caribbean, hunting for treasure ships, so the Spanish Crown decided to protect the bay with a chain of forts. That is how Morro, La Cabaña and also La Punta came to be.
La Punta was completed in the early 17th century. Its thick limestone walls and cannons facing the sea had a clear mission: to stop enemy ships from sailing freely into the bay. For many years, every vessel entering Havana was watched from here, ready to be challenged or attacked if necessary.
One of the most fascinating details is that, in the past, a huge chain was stretched between Morro Castle and La Punta. This chain could be raised to physically block the entrance to the bay. Picture the scene: at night, the harbor mouth closed by an iron chain, guarded by soldiers and cannons on both shores.
Over time, threats changed and military technology evolved, but the fortress continued to be used for different purposes. It has survived hurricanes, political changes and many years of sea wind and salt. Today, it is part of Havana’s everyday landscape and one of the most photogenic spots along the seafront.
While you search for this cache, take a moment to look around: the sea, the Malecón, the stone walls. Think that where you are now playing geocaching, centuries ago there were soldiers, cannons and lookouts scanning the horizon.
