About the New Year's Levée

The annual New Year’s Day Levée, a tradition dating back to the fur trade era, has a fascinating history. The word "Levée" is derived from the French verb "lever," meaning to rise, and originated with the "Levée du Soleil" instituted by King Louis XIV. The tradition crossed the English Channel, becoming a formal Court assembly in Great Britain and Ireland, where only men were received.

In Canada, the Levée became associated with New Year’s Day during the days of the fur trade. British Colonial Governors continued the tradition and later by Governors General and Lieutenant Governors, reflecting the deep-rooted customs of the country.

The Levée has a significant presence in the Canadian Forces, where it has been a long-standing New Year’s Day activity. Today, members of various Canadian Forces units and Headquarters across the country continue the tradition by welcoming military and civilian guests in the spirit of camaraderie on the first day of the New Year.
