Cheongtaesan in Gangwon do rises to about 1,194 meters on the border between Hoengseong and Pyeongchang. The slopes are wrapped in deep mixed forest, protected as the National Cheongtaesan Natural Recreation Forest, which serves as a model site for state managed woodland and habitat for a wide range of plants and animals.
Local tradition says that Taejo Yi Seong gye, the founder of the Joseon dynasty, passed through this area, admired the vivid blue green ridges, and gave the mountain its name. Today Cheongtaesan is included in the Gangwon twenty famous mountains challenge, yet it still feels quieter than some of the better known peaks in the province.
For this cache, our family was staying in Pyeongchang and I managed to sneak away for a quick solo climb while everyone else headed to the nearby water park. The forest path up from the recreation forest area is mostly steady, with some steeper sections, and feels very peaceful once you leave the facilities behind. This hide is placed just a few meters from the peak, hiding out behind some signage, hopefully innocuous. If you can't spot it, it's probably in trouble and I grant you permission to replace!
Please stay on the established trails, respect the forest rules, and return the container exactly as you found it before you continue your hike.
강원도 청태산은 해발 약 1 194미터로 횡성군 둔내면과 평창군 방림면의 경계에 자리한 산입니다. 산자락에는 국립 청태산 자연휴양림이 조성되어 있으며, 인공림과 천연림이 잘 어우러진 울창한 숲이 국유림 경영 시범 단지로 관리되고 다양한 야생 동식물이 서식하고 있습니다.
전해지는 이야기로는 조선 태조 이성계가 이곳을 지나가다가 푸른 산세에 반해 청태산이라는 이름을 붙였다고 합니다. 지금은 강원도 이십대 명산 인증 챌린지에 포함된 산이지만, 다른 유명 산들에 비해 비교적 한적한 편이라 잔잔한 숲길 산행을 즐기기 좋습니다.
이 캐시는 가족과 함께 평창에 머무르던 중, 다른 식구들이 근처 워터파크로 놀러 간 사이 잠시 혼자 산에 올라 숨겨 두었습니다. 자연휴양림 쪽에서 올라오는 등산로는 전반적으로 완만한 편이지만 중간중간 숨이 찰 만한 구간도 있어 적당한 산행 느낌을 줍니다. 캐시는 청태산 사면을 따라 이어지는 길 어딘가에 자리한, 올라가는 길에 잠깐 쉬어 가기 좋은 간단한 포인트입니다.
