Udawalawe National Park is best known for its elephants, but in addition to its wildlife, the park also boasts impressive geological structures. Between two natural water holes, millions of years old bedrock comes to the surface here. This rock belongs to the so-called Highland Complex, a zone of deeply metamorphosed rocks in Sri Lanka that were formed over 500 million years ago during the collision of former continents. The heat and pressure formed gneisses, granites, and migmatitic rocks, which today form the bedrock.

Weathering can create characteristic shapes that can be observed directly at the site. This EarthCache is designed to help you better understand the geological history and weathering processes of this special place. Scientists have also discovered that elephants deliberately eat this earth (geophagy) to supplement their mineral intake.

Here, between two water holes that are heavily used by wild animals, you can see exposed bedrock.

1. a) Describe the surface of the exposed rock (e.g., color, grain size, shapes of the rock blocks, etc.)!

b) Take a closer look at possible structures in the rock. a) Can you see any lines, bands, or a preferred direction in the rock (foliation, schistosity), or is the rock mass completely homogeneous? b) What does this tell you about the formation of the rock?

2. a) What forms of weathering can you see?

(e.g., cracks, rounding, flaking, root action, crusts, discoloration)

b) Could the nearby water sources influence the weathering or exposure of the rock? If so, how? If not, why not?

3. Describe the ground around the rock: Is it sandy, loamy, stony, with pebbles, dry cracks, or signs of erosion? What color is it?

Please send your answers and log in promptly.

A photo of you or part of you at the nearby waterhole and your caching name must be included with your log – please do not spoil the solutions.

🐘 This is wildlife territory. Please use only officially permitted paths and keep your distance from animals.
