Geocache Description:

(AまたはB)

Granite and basalt are two of the most common and contrasting types of igneous rocks, meaning they both formed from cooling magma or lava. The differences between them stem from their chemical composition and their cooling environment.

Granite and basalt are two types of igneous rocks that differ significantly in their characteristics. Granite is classified as felsic, meaning it is rich in lighter elements such as aluminum, sodium, and potassium. It forms as an intrusive (plutonic) rock when magma cools slowly deep within the Earth's crust. This slow cooling allows large crystals to develop, resulting in a coarse-grained (phaneritic) texture where minerals like quartz and feldspar are visible to the naked eye.

In contrast, basalt is mafic, containing heavier elements like magnesium and iron. It forms as an extrusive (volcanic) rock when lava cools rapidly at or near the Earth's surface. Due to the fast cooling, basalt has a fine-grained (aphanitic) texture with crystals so small they typically require magnification to be seen.

Chemically, granite has a high silica (SiO₂) content—around 73%—while basalt has a lower silica content, typically between 45% and 55%. Granite tends to be light-colored, appearing pink, white, or light gray, and has a lower density, making it a lighter rock. Basalt, on the other hand, is dark-colored—usually black or dark gray—and has a higher density, making it heavier.

Granite is commonly found in the continental crust, forming much of its structure. Basalt dominates the oceanic crust and is the primary rock type found in shield volcanoes, such as those in Hawaii.

[How to log]

  1. Observe rock B! Describe the texture of the rock? And how big is the grain size?
  2. Rock B was formed when lava cools rapidly at or near the Earth's surface. (O / X)
  3. Which rock contain more silica(SiO2)? (A Or B)
  4. Please take a photo of yourself or your geocaching item with Tokyo Station in the background, making sure not to include the rocks mentioned in this challenge, and post it to your log.
