Estimated distance to travel: 80m

Burvale Shoppingtown, or Burwood Highway Shoppingtown were some of the proposed names for a new 1970s shopping development, strategically positioned to fill the retail gap between the existing Forest Hill Shopping Centre and the proposed Knox City Shopping Centre catchments. When opened in 1974 however, the centre took on the name of Vermont South Shopping Centre.

It is one of Melbourne's original retro shopping centres and included such unique features as:

  • Curved, rather than straight, glass shopfronts
  • Iconic circular 'Atlas' skylights
  • A fully carpeted interior (to prevent runaway trolleys on the sloping floor)

Over the years the aging, coffee-stained carpet gave the centre accolades such as "the shabbiest shopping centre in Whitehorse" and a "daggy development", and finally in 2021, after 47 years, the carpet was removed and replaced with hard wooden flooring.
