Geocache Description:

At the posted coordinates is a small park across from the Long Island Rail Road Bellerose station. The Long Island Rail Road is the busiest commuter railroad in North America, carrying over 300,000 riders each weekday on 735 trains across Long Island and New York City.

This stop is Bellerose…but if you look around, you’ll notice you’re actually standing in Floral Park. Check a map and you’ll see something even more...there’s another Floral Park station just down Atlantic Avenue. So what’s going on here?

The answer lies in the way the railroad was designed. Bellerose Station sits right along the boundary of the two communities and serves only the Hempstead Branch, while other mainline trains rush past on nearby tracks without stopping. Because of this layout, the station was intentionally positioned in order to serve residents on both sides of the tracks.

If you enter the station, head down the stairs, and walk past the staircases that lead up to the platform, you can exit on the opposite side of the tracks and suddenly you’re in Bellerose. Walk back out the way you came, and you’re back in Floral Park. This arrangement allows Floral Park residents who don’t live near the official Floral Park station an easy, walkable commute using the Bellerose stop instead.

Note: you can approach this cache from either side of the station, simply walk under the station to get to the Floral Park side if you approach from Bellerose.
