Through 2024, there have been 30 Summer Olympic Games, held in 23 cities representing 19 countries, and 24 Winter Olympic Games, held in 21 cities representing 12 countries. In addition, three summer and two winter editions of the games were scheduled to take place but were later cancelled due to war.
The United States has hosted the most Olympics Games with 4 Summer Games (Atlanta, Los Angeles twice, and St. Louis) and 4 Winter Games (Lake Placid twice, Salt Lake City, and Squaw Valley) for a total of 8 times hosting. The U.S. will also host the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles and the 2034 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City.
London and Paris have both hosted 3 Summer Olympics. London being the first city to do so in 2012. Los Angeles will be the third city to do so when it hosts the 2028 Summer Games. Tokyo and Athens hosted the Summer Games twice each.
Innsbruck (Austria), Lake Placid (USA), and St. Moritz (Switzerland) have all hosted the Winter Olympics twice. Cortina d'Empazzo joins that list when they host the 2026 Winter Olympics. Additionally, Salt Lake City will become a double Winter Olympics host in 2034.
Beijing is the only city to have hosted both a Summer and Winter Olympics separately. They hosted the 2008 Summer Olympics and the 2022 Winter Games.
This Wherigo geocache will take you on a 4-stage tour of some locations which could represent Olympic host nations. The last stage will reveal the final coordinates for this cache.
