Syndicate Falls is located in the Syndicate area near Morne Diablotin National Park on the island of Dominica. Dominica is part of the Lesser Antilles volcanic arc, which formed as the Atlantic Plate is subducted beneath the Caribbean Plate. This tectonic process has produced repeated volcanic eruptions over millions of years, creating the volcanic rocks that make up much of the island today.
The waterfall flows over solidified volcanic lava, mainly basaltic to andesitic rock. These rocks formed when lava erupted at or near the Earth’s surface and cooled quickly, producing a dark-colored, fine-grained, dense rock. As the lava cooled, fractures and joints formed, creating natural weaknesses in the rock.
Over thousands of years, Dominica’s high rainfall and constant stream flow have eroded this volcanic bedrock. Water follows fractures in the rock, gradually widening them through erosion. At Syndicate Falls, this process has created a steep drop and a plunge pool at the base of the waterfall, formed by the force of falling water and rock fragments grinding into the bedrock. In some areas near the waterfall, small overhangs or shallow cavities have formed where erosion occurs faster than in the surrounding rock.
The waterfall is located within a protected rainforest that supports many endemic species, including the Sisserou Parrot (Amazona imperialis) and Jaco Parrot (Amazona arausiaca). Access to Syndicate Falls is managed by the local community, and a small entrance fee helps support trail maintenance, safety, and conservation.
