Sutton Courtenay GeoCache Series
After our recently placed GeoCache Series at Great Western Park (GWP) (cache #1-11, 14, 17-19, 30-32, 35, 38), Didcot (cache #12-13, 15-16, 20-25, 29, 33-34, 41-42, 44-45, 47-48, 53), Harwell (cache #26, 36-37, 43, 46, 54-55), Chilton (cache #27-28), Sutton Courtenay (cache #39) and Milton (cache #40, 49-52, 56-57), we decide to place a few more caches in other parts of Didcot and surrounding villages, in order to honour local heros, and to reflect our rich local history, stories and heritage. We hope you will enjoy these new caches and may also learn something new when you are caching, thank you!
Sutton Courtenay #64 - War Memorial (officially known as War Memorial #2499 ~ Sutton Courtenay)
The Sutton Courtenay War Memorial was a Grade II listed building. It was designed by Colonel HE Morgan Lindsay, and built by Henry Miller. The war memorial was located at: The Green, Sutton Courtenay, Abingdon, OX14 4AE.
The War Memorial is approximately 12 feet high and inscribed on 4 sides. It lists every man from the village who served in the Great War - either at home or overseas - as well as those who were killed or wounded.
The War Memorial was unveiled on 22nd May 1920 by H H Asquith, a former Prime Minister and resident of the village.
About this multi-cache:
This cache is inside a hedgerow, so please be safe and careful, especially when visiting with GeoKids and/or GeoPets. There may be many thorns and nettles when approaching the GZ, so please try not to be stung!
The path may also be very muddy and/or icy in the winter or after the rain, so long sleeves, trousers and welly boots are recommended!
Please also respect the local residents when searching for the cache. You do not need to enter any private land or cross any fence. Please expect muggles at many times of the day.
At the published coordinates, you will be standing in front of the War Memorial. Firstly, please find one side which has "SERVED AT HOME" on the top. How many names are there in total on this side? Let it be AB.
Then on the same side find a soldier with the surname "HUMPHRIES", how many letters are there in their first name? Let it be C.
Secondly, please move to another side of the memorial which has "SERVED OVERSEAS" on the top. How many names are there in total on this side? Let it be DE.
Then on the same side, find a soldier with the surname "DAWNEY", how many letters are there in their first name? Let it be F.
Thirdly, please move to another side of the memorial which has "WOUNDED" on the top. How many names are there in total on this side? Let it be GH.
Then on the same side, find a soldier with the surname "THATCHER", how many letters are there in their first name? Let it be J.
Finally, please move to another side of the memorial which has "IN COMMEMORATION" on the top. Find the soldier from the Royal Air Force, how many letters are there in their surname? Let it be K.
The final coordinates are some distance away at:

The checksum of all the digits in the final coordinates is 48.
Please also note:
Please bring your own pen, and open & close the cache lid carefully so the cache and log book can survive longer. You might need a tweezer to help retrieve the log paper.
Please also replace exactly as found due to obvious reason, and please be careful with the possible thorns, stinging nettles, and overhead tree branches! Long sleeves, trousers, and gloves are recommended.
